Focusing on strengths, not weaknesses

Recently, I stood up in a coffee shop and gave a plug for South Africa. As a former British army officer who has lived in South Africa for 20 years, and is married to a South African woman, I love this country, but something perplexes me: how South Africans view themselves, and how they are viewed by the rest of the world.

Every day, we open the papers, and we are told, and we are telling ourselves, how bad south Africa is / we are and how useless we are and how bad corruption is. But the rest of the world absolutely adores us. They think we have the best rugby team in the world. They think that South Africans have the most incredible work ethic.

We need to remember that South Africa is a great country. We have a lot to be proud of. We are a diverse nation with a rich history and culture. We have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. And we have some of the most talented and hardworking people in the world.

So, I ask you to think about the things you say about South Africa. Let’s be more positive about our country. Let’s focus on our strengths. And let’s work together to address our challenges.

I invite you to concentrate more on the positive things of our country and when in conversation with others talk about the things you love about it.

Together, we can make a difference. We can create a more positive image of South Africa, both at home and abroad.

Mojestically yours!

Si.
